What to do with this
- An IP shows an approximate city and your provider, not your home address. Only your provider knows the exact address, and shares it only with courts or police.
- To hide your IP from websites, people use a VPN. With a VPN on, the country above will be the VPN server's country.
- Websites recognise you not only by IP but also by email. Use a temporary email for one-off sign-ups so you're harder to link across sites.
- Home IPs change from time to time, and mobile internet often gives one IP to many people at once.
FAQ
What is an IP address?
It's a number your provider gives your internet connection. Websites use it to know where to send data and to roughly estimate your country and city.
Why is my city wrong?
IP location is approximate: it often shows the city where your provider's equipment is, or the VPN server's city if you use a VPN.
What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
They're two versions of addresses. IPv4 is shorter (e.g. 85.105.12.34), IPv6 is longer and contains colons. Many providers now give both.
